Mishkon Tephilo is a traditional synagogue with a Venice flair, welcoming interfaith families with open arms. Our services are mostly in Hebrew (with English translations and transliterations easily accessible) using traditional tunes. We also have scheduled family services (see our calendar) at which most of the service is in English and uses a number of songs taught in our preschool and familiar to those who went to a Jewish camp or religious school. Occasionally, we have side trips during our regular services, where members can choose a less-traditional service or a learning service that runs concurrently. Most weeks, we have a Kiddush luncheon immediately following services on Saturday morning, which is a great place to meet new people and catch up with old friends.
We are a less-formal group than most – one of our Saturday morning regulars says that our service is HSO (Hawaiian shirt optional). We do encourage appropriate dress (shoulders covered and head coverings for men), but our definition of ‘appropriate’ is strongly influenced by our Venice location.
In addition to services, we have a thriving preschool and religious school, many adult education activities and numerous social activities. We strive to be your Jewish community for the greater Venice area and recognize that not every activity meets the needs of every member. Because we’re a smaller congregation, we’re always open to new ideas that will appeal to our community and interfaith families.
Please join us at one of our many events, activities or services and find out what a great community we are!
